The Orkney Isles

This is a map of the Orkney Isles. There are over 70 islands that make up Orkney however only about 17 are inhabited. The population of Orkney is just under 20,000. most people live on the main land in the two Townes. Kirkwall is the bigger of the two Townes and about 7,500 people live there. Stromness is the other town and about 2,500 people live there. You can get a ferries out to most of the island. These all leave from Kirkwall. there are 9 different ferries to take you out to the smaller islands. there is also two boats to take you to mainland Scotland. one that leaves from Stromness witch is the bigger of the two and one that leaves from st. Margret's hope.

The mainland is made up of three different island. The three different islands are connected by the Churchill barriers. The barriers were made in world war 1 so that the enemies ships could not get into scapa flow and attack. there made up of big square boulders and have had a road put on the top. as you go across the barriers you can see many different sunken ships or parts of sunken ships. these have been there since the war.
